Restoring St Andrew’s Church
WE SAVED THE SPIRE, NOW SAVE THE TOWER!
Restoring St Andrew's Church is vital to save the building for everyone in the local community.
Help save the building and be part of an awesome local effort.
Please do donate if you can!
St Andrew’s Thornhill Square is a much loved local landmark, a community hub, and a place of worship. Thousands of local people use this building, from worship to weddings, self help groups to a thriving nursery school, toddler play to performing arts.
If you're a local resident or regular visitor, you'll have seen that the building is in desperate need of major work. You may have seen nets, scaffolding and stonemasons on the building recently. Many people have been working there to keep the building safe.
Age and decay have taken their toll and early 20th century repairs caused harm. Repairs are needed urgently to the tower and spire, stonework and to deal with subsidence. Inside, you can see cracks in the arch in the centre of the church and running from top to bottom of the beautiful stained glass window. Historic England has put St Andrew’s in the most serious category (A) of its Heritage At Risk register.
You may have seen posters, postcards and social media posts spreading the word.
The whole project will need £3-5 million over several years to complete repairs, update essential facilities and redesign the interior space so it is a safe and beautiful place for everyone. The wider project will also improve the layout of the internal space and give it a much needed facelift.
We raised over £1 million, through grants and donations, to save the church spire. A fantastic local effort - thank you!
Work is now underway and will progress throughout 2026. Now we must repair the tower, which will cost about £900,000. We're applying for grants, but there's a funding gap of about £400,000.
We believe we can do it with your help.
Following generous grant funding from Historic England and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, we continue to fundraise to repair the tower and other parts of the building, inside and out.
You could be part of a chance to take the scaffolding down forever in 2027. If we move fast, we can get this done and save money on scaffolding! By repairing the tower while the spire scaffolding is still up, it will cost less.
Elements of the project:
Repair the building’s exterior, safeguarding it for generations to come
Refurbish and reconfigure the interior space, making it more accessible and adaptable
Create more opportunities for the church to serve the community
